Africa “Ear Plugs”

A beauty tradition seen in many places like South America, and throughout Africa,is the use of lip and ear plugs. They are made of ivory, metal or bone, the plugs are inserted into the lobes or lips. The parts are stretched and the belief is that lip plugs ward off evil spirits.

The plugs serve as a cultural identity that distinguishes tribes from one another. The size of the plugs represents the beauty of the individual.
